Memorizing Scripture can be hard, and human nature tends to cause you to avoid things that are hard. Can I get an amen?

But, even as an adult, you can learn Bible verses so they stick in your mind, and most importantly, transform your heart.

Before you dive into tips and tricks to help you memorize Scripture, you have to buy into why you need to memorize Scripture.

When you truly get the life-changing power of memorizing Scripture, you will do whatever it takes to make it happen.

Now is the time to commit the Word of God in your mind and your heart.

Before we get into why memorizing Scripture is good for you, I want to be clear that it doesn’t earn you brownie points with God. You are either in Christ or you aren’t. You are saved by God’s grace alone when you put your faith in Christ alone.

There are so many reasons to memorize Scripture, but today’s focus includes the following eight biblical reasons.

1. Scripture Memory is an act of obedience

The Bible tells us to memorize Scripture.

“All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” How even greater if we have these truths stored up in our minds for all the times when we don’t have our Bibles with us.

2 Timothy 3:16

“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.”

Deuteronomy 11:18

Obeying God’s commands sanctifies you, and that is good for you.

2. Memorizing Scripture makes you more like Christ.

Jesus quoted the Old Testament 78 times. He quoted from Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Proverbs, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Amon, Jonah, Micah, and Malachi.

He referred to the Old Testament as "The Scriptures," "the Word of God," and "the wisdom of God."

There is no better example for us than Jesus. When we emulate Him, it is good for us.

3. Memorizing Scripture gives you a better understanding of the character of God

My dad was a banker. He was literally in the business of money.

One of his responsibilities was training tellers to spot counterfeit money.

How did he conduct his trainings?

Did he show different counterfeit bills?

Nope.

He focused on the real bills.

When you know the intricacies of the real thing, it’s much easier to spot the fake.

The same is true of the Bible.

In a world where God’s character is impugned everywhere you turn, if you don’t know the intricacies of the truth of the Bible, it’s easy to be deceived.

"Jesus said to the people who believed in him, 'You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'” John 8:31-32

The only place to find absolute truth in this fallen world is the Word of God.

4. Memorizing Scripture helps to make you wise

“Oh, how I love your law!

I meditate on it all day long.

Your commands are always with me

and make me wiser than my enemies.

I have more insight than all my teachers,

for I meditate on your statutes.

I have more understanding than the elders,

for I obey your precepts.” Psalm 119:97-100

Knowing and obeying makes you wise, and that is good for you.

5. Memorizing Scripture renews your mind

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2

"Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth." Colossians 3:2

The Bible talks in depth about taking your thoughts captive and making them obedient to Christ.

What goes into your mind, settles in your heart, and comes out in your words and deeds.

When you memorize and meditate on Scripture, it keeps your mind focused on God, and that is good for you.

Big and little temptations lurk around every corner. Fortunately for us, God’s Word tells us He will give us a way out.

Our biggest weapon against temptation is the power of God living in us. He promises to give us a way out.

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

1 Corinthians 10:13

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

James 4:7

Knowing Scripture gives you the power to resist temptation, and that is good for you.

7. Memorizing Scripture helps you live out your faith

“The law of their God is in their hearts;

their feet do not slip.” Psalm 37:31

“You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.”

Matthew 22:29

As long as you have breath in your lungs, God wants you to know Him and live a life that brings Him glory, and that is good for you.

8. Memorizing Scripture is a beautiful way to spend time with God

This may be my favorite reason to memorize Scripture— lingering in God’s Word and enjoying being in His presence.

If you’ve ever found yourself feeling distant from God, getting in the Word and spending time with Him is the best first step to getting back in right relationship.

The more you know God and the more time you spend with Him, the more fall in love with Him.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13

“Come near to God and he will come near to you.” James 4:8

Memorizing Scripture allows you to bask in the goodness of God, and that is good for you.
