What Being Disorganized Really Says About You
I think it’s time we had a little talk, me and you.
A frank discussion about what the disorganization in your life truly means.
Maybe what it’s a symptom of.
Maybe what it’s costing you.
An open, honest, and perhaps even a little uncomfortable conversation about the truth of living a disorganized life.
Perhaps a dialog about unnecessary busy-ness. Empty busy-ness that adds nothing of value to your day. To your legacy.
A discourse on how disorganization effects things like your time, money, and energy. How it impacts your relationships and the joy you experience, or don’t, on a daily basis.
Deep breath. It’s truth time.
You ready?
What Your Disorganization DOESN’T Mean
The truth about disorganization is that it doesn’t make you a slacker.
The truth about disorganization is that it doesn’t make you a failure.
The truth about disorganization is that it doesn’t mean you’re a bad or inferior person.
It has nothing to do with your value. It has nothing to do with your ability to be a good spouse, parent, child, or friend.
The truth about disorganization is that it makes you disorganized.
Did you hear me?
The only thing that disorganization means is that you’re disorganized.
Disorganization is not a reflection of character, intelligence, ability, or competence.
As a matter of fact, the skill of organizing or the state of being organized is a learned skill.
That’s right. You heard me. A. Learned. Skill.
Do you remember when you first learned your multiplication tables? I dunno about you but HOLY. CRAP. That stuff did NOT come naturally to me. I mean, the teacher had to actually TEACH me. Had to help me and make me practice. Had to support and encourage me until I gained the confidence and flat out knowledge about those stupid multiplication facts!
And to be quite honest, if you asked me the product of seven multiplied by eight, I’d more than likely STILL have to use my fingers to figure it out.
Organization is freakishly like learning your multiplication tables.
If you feel the same way, I have a post on how to start right HERE.
For some people, it’s second nature. It’s like they were born knowing how to do it. It’s instinctive. It’s…as much a part of who they are as their eye color.
For other people, no matter how hard they try, it’s a struggle. Their brain simply isn’t wired to naturally think that way. To think in those terms. They need some tricks and strategies to get them started. Some short cuts and a secret or two to support their practice.
And still for others, sometimes you’ve just gotta buy you a calculator.
The same is true when it comes to living an organized life! For some people, it’s just easy. For others, they need a little bit of help before they can get it. And some people? Some people--whether it’s due to time, desire, physical limitations, or whatever--choose to outsource!
Regardless of which of those three categories you fall into, one thing will ALWAYS be true.
The only thing that disorganization says about you is that you’re disorganized.
Seriously. Say it with me now.
“The only thing that disorganizations says about a person is that they’re disorganized.”
And you know what? Say it again. SAY. IT. AGAIN. Because those voices in your head are trying to tell you otherwise.
A good friend of mine, Mr. Andy Waldeck, wrote a song called “Ordinary Man” and my absolute favorite lyric in it says, “So the demons in your head have found another friend and his name is self-doubt.”
The demons in your head.
That’s not just a figure of speech, you know. Those demons? They’re real.
John 10:10 states,
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I (Jesus) came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
The thief, Satan, deceitful enemy that he is, ONLY wants to steal, kill, and destroy. Steal our joy. Kill our spirit. Destroy our relationships, so he can separate us from the truth.
And the truth?
That truth is Jesus.
And Jesus wants for us to have an abundant life. A life overflowing with joy and hope, faith and love. A life that doesn’t include the lies of the devil. The lies that sneak up on us and wiggle their way deep into our brains when we’re overwhelmed. When we’re most vulnerable.
Ephesians 6:12 implores,
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
See, the struggle IS real. And we grapple with it every single day. We roll around with it. It tries to beat us with lies. It tries to weaken us with half-truths using even the tiniest foothold.
The Lies and Half-Truths like-
“If I was a better person, then I could keep up with my home.”
“If I wasn’t such a loser, maybe I could finally catch up on laundry.”
“If I was smart enough, I could tame that paperwork explosion that’s covering every square inch of my office.”
It tries to separate us from others by convincing us that-
“I’m the only one who lives like this.”
“My friends and family wouldn’t like me if they knew the truth.”
”I’m hopeless. No one can help me.”
Absolute crap, all of it! Every single bit.
If you struggle with organization, all it means is that you struggle with organization.
So what is a girl to do?
How do you get those demons in your head to shut up? To leave you alone? How do you make sure they’re the ones that tap out?
You’ve gotta arm yourself to the hilt.
And Ephesians 6:10-20? Well, Ephesians 6:10-20 tells us exactly how to do that.
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.
To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.”
Put On The Whole Armor of God
The belt of truth.
The breastplate of righteousness.
The readiness given by the gospel of peace.
The shield of faith.
The helmet of salvation.
The sword of the Spirit.
The FULL armor of God? THIS is your arsenal. And it works every time. For whatever lie the enemy is trying to pass off as truth.
Being disorganized only means you’re disorganized, y’all. And we can fix that.
Sometimes we all need a little help remembering the truth. Here are some go to’s for ya’ when you’re wrestling with a lie.
