How to Handle Your Curious Cravings

Curiosity killed the cat.

While this isn't biblical, it sure fits nicely in the opening chapters of Genesis where Eve stumbles and falls and takes her husband down with her. 

Moreover, there is much to learn from our Lord's wise warning in Genesis 2:17,

"You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die."

Why do we feel the need to know?

Better yet, why do we feel the right to be informed? How much heartache and misery we could be spared if we truly heeded God's warning in Proverbs 3:5! 

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding."

Your curiosity, like Eve's, is exactly what the enemy will tap into. It's the area of your mind and heart where he sets up camp and slowly leads you down a path of destruction, deceit, and despair. It's a dark path. Trust me. I've traveled it a time or two. However, I am thankful that God's constant work in my life has trained my eyes and ears to listen to the prompting of the Holy Spirit. And my friend, He can do the same for you. Just be obedient and listen.

Thinking about visiting that website promoting sexuality, porn, or "casual encounters with singles or married couples in your area?"

Don't search it.

It will only corrode your thoughts, corrupt your judgment, and scar your mind's eye with images you won't soon shake. Instead,

"Fix your sight on what is true, honorable, pure, lovely, and admirable" Philippians 4:8

Intrigued by the latest novel or movie that's all the rave? That's coated in controversy? That is praised for "its explicitly erotic scenes featuring elements of sexual practice."

Don't read it. Don't rent it.

The plot will only leave you questioning the status of your own relationships--or worse, cause you to compare yourself to the characters. Remember,

"Cast down imaginations and every high thought that exalts itself against the knowledge of God." 2 Corinthians 10:5

Don't do it.

It's just a mirage--an illusion designed to distract you from,

"the one true, living God..." Jeremiah 10:10

Curiously attracted to the wrong guy? Red flags popping up everywhere early in the relationship?

Proceed with caution. While red flags are not biblical, they just may be the Holy Spirit prompting you to abandon the relationship. You are not his savior. You cannot change him. Christ can,

"I am the way and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6

I love Casting Crowns' "Slow Fade." The lyrics are a prescription for curious cats like you and me!

God did not design us to be all knowing, but He did design us to have free will--the will to trust Him, to take Him at his word. 

It is a slow fade indeed, and I've come to learn that ignorance is bliss. Like the other sayings, this one isn't biblical either. However, God is very clear when he declares,

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways" Isaiah 55:8

You see, when we struggle and strive and fight to know or have our way, we put ourselves at risk, like sitting ducks for the enemy. 

Be on guard.

There are places the enemy is waiting to trap you. If you are curious, be curious for Christ. Only he can satisfy your every craving!
