What to Do When You're Worrying About Your Business

Running a business can be so unpredictable. The highs and lows come in waves — from month to month and even from hour to hour. You get a guest article published online one minute, and a client fires you the next. The roller coaster called entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart!

Before I quit my day job to run Jess Creatives full-time, the biggest concern my husband and I had was the lack of financial security. The ups and downs that are talked about so often in entrepreneurship include finances! The lack of money, or fear of lack of money, can cause a lot of worry.

Whether you provide a service or sell a product, it’s the clients and customers that help us pay our bills. There are slow times of the year for businesses, but there’s also times that you’re just not finding the right people. You get inquiries, but no one books you; people ask for refunds, or maybe people just aren’t coming to you at all.

Find your value in God, not your business

Find your value in God, not your business

Earlier this month, I participated in #theimperfectboss campaign on Instagram. If you didn’t see it, it was a three-day social media movement where business owners shared confessions and faults on social media. Several hundred women shared their secrets and downfalls instead of the usual perfect-looking flat-lays and selfies.

Social media has become a highlight reel instead of reality.

I know I’m not the only one who sees these highlights day after day and starts to notice the negative influence it can have on my mind. With the high use of social media today, especially as business owners, it’s not as easy to just ignore social media. For me, social media has created several great friendships, and helped me grow my business in a big way.

The constant use of social media makes it that much more important to remind ourselves what God says and believes about us.

But, if I’m being honest, it’s not just social media that can have an influence on me. My business itself can negatively influence my thoughts with bad clients or low sales. The influence swings both ways though; with big projects and big months, I can start to feel pretty good about myself.

How Do I Keep My Faith a Part of My Business?

How Do I Keep My Faith a Part of My Business?

There's a recurring question I see Christian entrepreneurs asking online -- "How do I keep my faith a part of my business?"  It's a good, important question, but I believe that sometimes we are overthinking it.

Psalm 19:3 says:

"The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun."

The heavens proclaim His glory, without speaking a word. We don't have to put scripture on our website and declare that we are Christians. These are perfectly fine things to do, don't get me wrong -- but the Bible says they will know us by our love (John 13:35), not by posting scripture. If others will know us by our love, we need to put more emphasis on actually practicing what we preach. Doing this with our clients and colleagues is how we keep our faith in our business.
